Washington, D.C. – The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) issued the following statement after the release of a new bipartisan COVID-19 Emergency Relief proposal, which includes $160 billion in relief for state, local and tribal governments:

“NCSL commends the bipartisan group of Senate and House members and leaders that came together to craft and support an Emergency Relief Framework. We urge the Senate and the House to act quickly to pass this critical legislation. The CARES Act funding has helped states avert catastrophic economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and we believe additional aid proposed in this package will help states continue to stave off its worst economic effects as the virus continues to surge. By providing additional state and local government fiscal assistance, unemployment insurance, Paycheck Protection Program funding, and resources for transportation, education and healthcare, this relief package provides states the resources to provide the critical services their citizens need to endure the next phase of the pandemic and eventual recovery.”

NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
