Denver—More than 6,000 state legislators, legislative staff, federal officials and others from across the country and world will be making their way to Boston for the annual National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit Aug. 6-9.
Attendees will be joined by distinguished speakers from Massachusetts including Governor Charlie Baker, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Senate President Stanley Rosenberg and former Governor William Weld. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin and many more notable speakers also will appear at the Summit.
For more than 40 years, the NCSL Legislative Summit has brought together legislators and staff from both sides of the aisle to tackle and discuss difficult problems and find reasonable solutions. Legislators will vote on important policies at the annual business meeting, and set the framework for the States’ Agenda, which guides NCSL’s advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C., for the upcoming year.
“The NSCL Legislative Summit has proven to be a highly-effective venue for sharing ideas, finding best practices, and moving our country forward state-by-state,” said DeLeo. “I am pleased to welcome legislators from across the country to Massachusetts where I believe we will all learn from the commonwealth’s long and proud history, and each other.”
More than 100 sessions are scheduled ranging from the criminal justice system to education, health care to taxes, technology to transportation, and much more. The NCSL Summit creates a platform for leading discussion around some of our nation’s most pressing issues surfacing around the country and our states. Some increasingly popular sessions include the Beyond the Horizon: U.S. Economic Outlook; First Stop: Jail or Treatment; and, Cybersecurity Preparedness and Response, just to name a few.
"I am thrilled that the NCSL Legislative Summit is being held in Boston this year,” Rosenberg said. “The Summit is an event where we can share ideas about best practices on legislative issues and build relationships with legislators from around the country while also showcasing our great commonwealth. NCSL has put together a robust agenda where we can learn about how each state is addressing a variety of issues including state budgets, health care, education, redistricting and criminal justice reform."
The Summit is taking place at Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston Harbor.
While in Boston, legislators and legislative staff will be among leading experts in numerous policy issues and will be provided with tools to take home to develop into even more transformational leaders. The Summit also will host more than 260 attendees from 20 foreign countries. During the week, international participants, many of whom are elected officials and legislative staff, will participate in sessions and activities.
NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
