Legislators, Legislative Staff and Other Attendees Gather for 42nd Summit
Denver—More than 5,000 state legislators, legislative staff, federal officials and others from across the country and world will be making their way to Chicago for the annual National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit Aug. 8-11.
Attendees will be joined by distinguished speakers including Ted Koppel, an author and 42-year veteran of ABC News; Jeanine Pirro, a legal analyst and host of a Fox News program; Lyndon Rive, the co-founder and CEO of Solar City; Hugh Acheson, a chef and judge on “Top Chef”; Julia Stasch, the president of the John D. and MacArthur Foundation; Melinda Gates, from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and many more notable speakers.
For more than 40 years, the Legislative Summit has brought together legislators and staff from both sides of the aisle to tackle and discuss difficult problems and find reasonable solutions. Legislators will vote on important policies at the annual business meeting, and set the framework for the States’ Agenda, which guides NCSL’s advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C., for the upcoming year.
“Chicago is proud to once again host this tremendous opportunity to exchange ideas and information as we learn from each other’s unique experiences in addressing issues state governments face across our country,” Senate President John J. Cullerton (D-Chicago, 6th District) said.
More than 100 sessions are scheduled ranging from the criminal justice system to education, health care to taxes, technology to transportation, and much more. The NCSL Summit creates a platform for leading discussion around some of the most pressing issues surfacing around the country and in the states. Some increasingly popular sessions include Police Body Cameras, Legalizing Marijuana, Reducing Poverty, and Legalizing Marijuana, just to name a few
The Summit is taking place at McCormick Place in downtown Chicago.
“NCSL is a valuable resource to legislators and staff,” Assistant Illinois Senate Republican Leader Bill Brady (R-44th District) said. “The annual meeting provides a tremendous opportunity for bipartisan networking. But even more importantly, it is a forum for the membership to come together to share ideas, discuss common issues and potential solutions. It is an opportunity that fosters good public policy.”
While in the Windy City, legislators and legislative staff will hear from leading experts in numerous policy issues and be provided with tools to take home to develop into even more transformational leaders. The Summit also will host more than 260 attendees from 20 foreign countries. During the course of the week, international participants, many of whom are elected officials and legislative staff, will participate in sessions and activities.
All meetings held in conjunction with NCSL’s Legislative Summit are open to the press. Registration is required but free to credentialed members of the media. Online registration is open and highly encouraged. Please review NCSL’s media policy before registering.
