LOUISVILLE, Ky.—John Snyder, Transportation Committee staff administrator in the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission, became the staff chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) at the 2024 Legislative Summit in Louisville, Ky. Snyder was elected staff vice chair at the 2023 Legislative Summit in Indianapolis. NCSL, a bipartisan organization, serves the nation’s 7,386 legislators and more than 30,000 legislative staff.
“I am extremely proud of the effort NCSL continually puts in to support and train our legislative staff,” Snyder said. “Since NCSL was founded in 1975, the organization has been committed to improving and innovating its outreach and guidance for legislators and their staff. I look forward to continuing these efforts in the coming year as we celebrate NCSL’s 50th anniversary.”
NCSL is the only national organization that provides training, professional growth opportunities and information sharing for legislative staff. The organization’s nine professional staff associations and various staff networks sponsor meetings, training opportunities and publications. Legislative staffers are also eligible to be members of the NCSL standing committees, which address state policy issues and state-federal priorities.
Snyder is one of seven officers (four legislators and three legislative staff members) on NCSL’s 63-member Executive Committee, which is elected yearly and includes both legislators and staff.
A graduate of the University of Louisville, Snyder has been part of the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission for over 35 years. He has served on NCSL standing committees, as staff chair and vice chair of both the Transportation and the Natural Resources and Infrastructure committees, and as a member of the Executive Committee.
Snyder lives in Frankfort with his wife, Martha, with whom he has two grown children.
NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
