Washington–NCSL President Speaker Robin Vos (Wis.) and NCSL President-elect Speaker Scott Saiki (Hawaii) released a joint statement regarding the protestors’ overrun of the U.S. Capitol Wednesday.

"Violence and lawlessness in American discourse are unacceptable. The American rights to protest and free speech are fundamental to our democracy. These rights must be expressed peacefully and not in ways that undermine the institution of the legislature. Legislatures, including the U. S. Congress, must be able to function safely and effectively to represent all Americans."

NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
