Thousands of State Policy Makers Converge on San Antonio for National Legislative Summit

An estimated 4,500 state lawmakers, legislative staff and policy experts are gathering in San Antonio, Texas, this week for the National Conference of Legislatures’ (NCSL) 2011 Legislative Summit.

NCSL’s Legislative Summit is the largest and only venue of its kind where legislators and staff can come together to promote and encourage bipartisan dialogue on some of the most pressing issues facing states. The more than 150 policy forums at the Legislative Summit have been a launching pad for new ideas in policy debates across the country, including budget conditions, pensions, job recovery, health care and education. In addition to state lawmakers, more than 200 international legislators and legislative staff from more than 20 countries will be in attendance.

The 2011 Legislative Summit kicks off Monday, Aug. 8 through Thursday, Aug. 11. The Summit is expected to bring in $6 million for the city of San Antonio and the state of Texas.

Some of the speakers at the Summit include:

  • Texas Governor Rick Perry
  • The crew of space shuttle Atlantis
  • Author and motivational speaker Jim Collins
  • Academy Award winner and U.N. Goodwill Ambassador Mira Sorvino
  • John Hofmeister, former president of Shell Oil
  • Kevin Concannon, USDA undersecretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services
