Competency to Stand Trial
NCSL’s new installment of the Legislative Primer Series on Front-End Justice focuses on competency to stand trial. The new report provides an overview of competency to stand trial evaluation and restoration processes in the states. States have taken a variety of approaches, sometimes mandated by court order, to reduce the number of competency cases and expedite competency evaluation and restoration services.

Criminal Records and Reentry Toolkit
Approximately 1 in every 3 adults have a criminal record, which can create barriers to jobs, occupational licensing, housing, and higher education opportunities. State legislatures are playing a key role in evaluating collateral consequences of a criminal record and ascertaining policies that help released offenders successfully transition back into the community. Youth Justice Fellows Program
NCSL’s first Youth Justice Fellows Program is a year-long, peer-learning opportunity designed to support legislators who are experienced or emerging leaders on youth justice issues, including: age of juvenile court jurisdiction, adolescent brain development, alternatives to detention and incarceration, due process protections, diversion and reducing system involvement, conditions of confinement, sentencing, and juvenile life without parole.
