Media Alert | For Immediate Release

February 6, 2023

Denver—A new report showcases how states can prepare for and facilitate a rapid response to energy emergencies and disruptions ranging from cyberattacks to extreme weather and everything in between. “2021-2022 Energy Security State Legislative Review: Emergency Response Restoration and Recovery” is the final installment in a three-part energy security report from the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Environment, Energy and Transportation Program.

The state response to energy emergencies is a crucial part of what is ultimately a broader cycle of action that brings communities towards energy resilience.

The latest installment offers an in-depth analysis on the role of state legislatures in building energy resilience in their communities. By enacting policies to support quick recovery efforts and encouraging interagency and interstate collaboration, lawmakers have shown flexible and innovative leadership in setting the policy foundation and directing resources that impact state approaches to recovery and response.

Between 2021 and 2022, state lawmakers introduced over 1,000 bills broadly related to energy security; of those, approximately 20%, or 200 bills were enacted.
