Home Grown Solutions: Job Growth and Economic Development (Joint with the Labor and Economic Development Committee)

The recession has shown that there are no one-size-fits all approach to creating jobs and spurring economic development.  In fact, it is quite difficult to be successful in one element without involving the other. This session will explore strategies aimed at creating jobs with limited resources.

The committee will receive an update on federal activity and its effect on states.

Tax Expenditures/State Sunset Provisions

Tax expenditures offer tools aimed at creating and retaining jobs. How well are they performing and what actions are states now taking with tax expenditures?

Sunset commissions review the core operations of state agencies, setting a termination date unless the legislature reauthorizes agency functions. Learn more about the sunset process at this informative session.

States are coping with a sluggish economy and weak revenue performance.  Join this discussion to get the latest information on the state budget situation and share your state's response to growing fiscal challenges.

Federal Credit Assistance for State Governments

The federal government has assisted automakers and Wall Street to help them cope with the downturn in the economy. Can the same be done for states as their budgets continue to erode? This session will discuss this possibility and the complications that may come with it.

Steering Committee

Standing committee chairs and staff chairs, as members of the Steering Committee, should plan to attend. The Steering Committee will review policy statements reported out of committees and determine the calendars for the Business Meeting on Saturday, April 10.
