    State News & Reports

  • Connecticut. The Office of Fiscal Analysis has made a recent presentation,"How to Read a Budget Sheet: A Workshop for Legislators and Staff," available online.
  • Illinois. The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability issued its annual "Illinois’ National Rankings" report. The report examines how Illinois compares to other states in categories such as tax rates, revenues, government spending and employment.
  • Oregon. The Legislative Revenue Office issued a report comparing state and local taxes across the region and how regional tax policy influences corporate location decisions.
  • Texas. The Legislative Budget Board published a "Guide to Fiscal Notes" for state agencies. The publication outlines the process for fiscal notes and impact statements in Texas.
  • Wisconsin. The Legislative Fiscal Bureau (LFB) recently published 100 informational papers covering a range of state and local fiscal issues, including an in-depth look at State and Local Government Revenue and Expenditure Rankings across the U.S. All 100 of the LFB’s publications can be accessed here.

  • The Congressional Budget Office released a report examining the effects of taxing businesses through the individual income tax instead of the corporate income tax.
  • The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago issued a Chicago Fed Letter summarizing their recent Economic Outlook Symposium. The letter discusses U.S. economic performance in 2012 and forecasts for 2013.
  • The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston has published a Public Policy Discussion Paper titled “Labor-Market Polarization Over the Business Cycle.” The paper examines how labor market polarization has interacted with the business cycle since the 1970s.

  • The Pew Center on the States published a report investigating the cost of state tax incentives and effective ways to design incentives.
  • The Rockefeller Institute of Government published an Issue Brief analyzing trends in state and local government employment through previous recessions and the Great Recession.
  • The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) released a report titled "Knocking on the College Door: Projections of High School Graduates," which highlights high school graduation trends and future projections across the 50 states.
