New Business

ASLCS President Rob Marchant addressed the Committee stating that the main priority was to choose a location for the 2013 Professional Development Seminar (PDS). He thanked the Committee leadership and members for their service to ASLCS. President Marchant also stated that, at present, the 1st choice for the Spring Meeting was Pittsburgh, PA.

Pat Harris stated that as the Committee discussed sites for 2013 a primary goal would be to find a location which would be willing to be a Host State, since the 2011 PDS and 2012 PDS were both scheduled to be No-Host events.

Chair Harris stated that the Committee would not send out a survey, instead narrowing the focus to 3 or 4 choices among states which had previously expressed an interest in hosting the PDS. States that were mentioned as possible locations included: California, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Wyoming. Paula Rossestto, Senate Journal Clerk, (CA) stated that California was very interested in hosting the meeting in either Sacramento or San Francisco. Paula also said that she would discuss with the California leadership the possibility of holding the meeting there. Chair Harris stated that South Carolina used to be very active in ASLCS and taking the PDS to the state might allow them to again become more involved. The Committee discussed concerns associated with picking Wyoming as a Host site, including difficulty of travel and expense. Chair Harris appointed Norma Chastain (AZ) to contact Wyoming members to see if they would be interested in having a Host or Hybrid meeting.

The Committee discussed the recent reluctance of states to host the PDS because of the economy and difficulties in raising money. Jay Braxton (VA) asked how much money a host state should try to raise. Denise Weeks (NC) stated that most states try to raise between $50,000 - $75,000 to host. It was mentioned that the PDS brings in a great deal of revenue to the host area and that fact had been and could be used to encourage legislatures and local Convention Bureaus to appropriate and donate funds.

There being no more business, on motion of Russell Humphrey (TN) and seconded by Ann Cornwell (AR), the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
Emily Howard, VA, recorder
