“I try to be a pessimistic optimist: Plan for the worst, hope for the best and remember that everything is a learning opportunity.”
Dunlop Relf
Why did you choose to work at the Legislature?
I began as a session employee. I thought it would be a great way to learn about the issues facing the state and how state government functions, and to make connections. When the opportunity to become a permanent employee became available, I realized just how important the quiet and faithful execution of legislative functions is to our democracy.
What skill or talent are you most proud of?
Finding the silver linings. I try to be a pessimistic optimist: Plan for the worst, hope for the best, and remember that everything is a learning opportunity and there is always some good that can come of every situation.
What’s the best advice you were ever given?
People remember how you make them feel. Every day that you make someone’s life a little easier or make them smile or laugh is a success.
Who or what inspires you?
As cliché as it is, my parents, especially with my dad’s Parkinson’s diagnosis a little over two years ago. Watching him battle this disease with such strength, humor and grace is incredibly inspiring. As is my mum’s unwavering strength, support and devotion.
What’s one thing you love about your state or territory?
The culture. Hawaii not only has a rich native culture that imbues a sense of belonging and deep respect but it’s also one of the most diverse places in the country that truly reflects what a melting pot is and should be. And the food is ono (delicious) too.
What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?
I love a good juicy summer read, so right now I am enjoying “Wives Like Us,” by Plum Sykes. I am close to finishing the podcast “The Godmother” about Eunice Carter, one of the first Black women to be a prosecutor in the U.S. who was instrumental in the prosecution of the gangster Charles “Lucky” Luciano and am dreading having to find a new podcast when I finish it.
