Job Overview
The spokesperson serves as a chief communications strategist for the Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly. Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director of the Assembly Democratic Majority and the Director of Communications, the chosen candidate will work directly with the Speaker and senior staff on press outreach, representing the head of a caucus that is leading on issues like affordability for New Jersey families, gun violence prevention, economic development, food security, and quality of life issues.
As a key player in New Jersey politics, the spokesperson will be responsible for driving a communications narrative that showcases the agenda of the Speaker and Assembly leadership at large. This position will also represent the Speaker's voice when reporting directly to the Director of Communications to ensure all public messaging is aligned. This position will work closely with the Director of Communications in overseeing a multi-tiered strategic communications plan to ensure consistent media coverage, including planned media events, releases and op-eds on policy positions – sustaining a media narrative that speaks to political insiders as well as constituents across the state.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities:
- Handling media inquiries and maintaining relationships with reporters.
- Media outreach and proactive pitching.
- Managing flow of communications between the Speaker, Director of Communications and the General Assembly.
- Working with legislative staff to effectively communicate Speaker messages.
- Writing speeches, public statements, media advisories and releases.
- Overseeing social media content and platforms for the Speaker.
- Planning, pitching and executing press events and video features.
- Assisting communications department with other assignments.
Other duties as directed by the Speaker and senior staff
- The position works closely with policy staff in the office to communicate effectively and efficiently about the agenda of the leadership team.
- The position will also work closely with other caucus members and their staff as well as the Senior Leadership within the Majority Office.
- The position is a full-time, in-person position based in the New Jersey Statehouse, with significant in-state travel required.
Qualifications
Experience
- 5-7 years working in communications with increasingly responsible experience in dealing with media, public policy, government relations, or other related experience.
- Strong writing skills, communication skills and a demonstrated ability to translate policy goals into language that members of the public can understand are required.
Residency Law: All persons newly hired have one year to establish residency in New Jersey, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L 2011, Chapter 70).
