Job Overview

Democratic state legislators representing New Jersey’s 32nd Legislative District (Senator Raj Mukherji, Assemblyman John Allen, and Assemblywoman Jessica Ramirez) seek a dedicated, self-starting, organized, intelligent Constituent Services Aide with extreme attention to detail, a razor-sharp memory, and an ability to handle a broad range of duties in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

The ideal candidate will be qualified to double as a Content Creator / Public Information Officer for the legislative office. Creative skills and experience with social media, digital content creation, video production/editing, template-based website editing, etc. are desired. Candidate must exercise considerable discretion and good judgment, as well as the ability to support and zealously advocate for constituents and interface and work with senior level government and business leaders and their offices. Candidates should be experienced in handling a wide range of administrative and related tasks and be able to work independently and confidently under pressure

Responsibilities

  • As a one-person PIO team, produce video and multimedia productions, edit graphics, and create digital content for social media and dissemination of information to constituents.
  • Act as a videographer and editor, graphics creator, content writer, and website editor encompassing pre-production, production, and post-production. Work with cameras, lighting, and microphones. Troubleshoot and problem-solve.
  • Meet with constituents and help resolve their problems by liaising with municipal, county, state, and federal agencies, federal lawmakers, nonprofits, private sector businesses, etc.
  • Effectively respond to questions, concerns, and requests submitted by constituents, lobbyists, media, etc.
  • Monitor local news, events, calendars, and schedules and keep the legislators apprised of same. Proactive maintain ongoing relationships with neighborhood groups, community organizations, ward leaders, etc. and regularly appear at meetings and events on behalf of the Senator or Assemblypersons.
  • Independently author (and work with other staff to prepare and proofread) professional e-mails and correspondences, press releases, speeches, articles for biannual newsletter, memoranda, etc.
  • Assist other staffers with office management (manage daily operations of legislative district office).
  • Manage and file correspondences and other physical and electronic documents.
  • Contact management, coordination of e-mail lists, and draft correspondences for mass distribution.
  • Analyze and draft legislation and policy positions for the legislators.
  • Facilitate and coordinate communication between the legislators and their colleagues, State and local officials, agencies, stakeholders, and constituents in connection with the drafting and advancement of legislation.
  • Managing procurement of office supplies and other office needs.
  • Maximize visibility through social media.
  • Produce biannual newsletter
  • On a rotating basis with other personnel, drive the Senator to/from events, legislative committee hearings, voting sessions, etc.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with iPhone and desktop professional video editing software (iMovie, CapCut, Final Cut Pro, Canva, etc.), social media platforms, and Adobe collections (Premiere, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, typography, video editing, and print and web design capabilities are a strong plus.
  • Have the ability to storyboard or translate ideas to collections.
  • Attention to detail and excellent memory retention.
  • Highly effective writer. Excellent spelling and grammar a must.
  • Exceptional research skills using the Internet and other tools.
  • Self-starter with strong work ethic. Ability to achieve equally high productivity during busy periods and periods of “downtime” by being self-driven and intuitive.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office (all programs, especially Outlook/Exchange server, Word, and Excel) a must.
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively.
  • Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and desire to embrace a fast-paced, high-volume environment that requires multitasking while adhering to deadlines, and concurrent management of projects, relationships, and all correspondence.
  • Strong oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills with a high WPM typing rate essential along with an excellent command of grammar and spelling.
  • Experience and/or ability to work with public officials, constituents, and media.
  • Skills of persuasion.
  • Ability to research and analyze relevant constituent issues, track legislation, and prepare briefings and materials for the legislators.
  • Flexibility with schedule (some evenings and weekends required); ability to adapt to changing needs and time pressures.
  • Valid NJ driver’s license and a reliable car.
