Childhood caries, also known as tooth decay, is the most common chronic disease among children, affecting nearly 23% of those ages 2-5 and 52% of those ages 6-8. Left untreated, poor oral health can lead to long-term complications, including an increased risk of heart disease, diminished self-confidence and negative impacts on academic performance. While Medicaid’s Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit helps at least 18.3 million children access preventive dental care annually, barriers such as financial constraints, transportation challenges and geographic limitations persist. States are addressing some of these barriers by increasing access to early oral health care in settings where children and families are, including pediatric offices, homes and schools.
