Resource Maternal and Child Health Fellows 2020

Welcome and Overview

This session will welcome the 2020 class of Maternal and Child Health Fellows with an overview of the program and introductions to lay a strong foundation for the remainder of the program. Fellows will have the opportunity to connect in small groups to share their work and priorities.

Maternal and Child Health State and Federal Policy: Current Topics

This session will highlight current MCH priorities from the federal perspective, including on state-level efforts to address MCH; state priorities for maternal and child health; and considerations and resources for states during the COVID-19 pandemic. This session will be interactive with speakers and Fellows discussing state challenges, successes and efforts as they pertain to maternal and child health, with a focus on COVID-19’s impacts on this special population.

ACEs - Child Safety and Mental Health

This session will provide an overview of child safety and mental health in the framework of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Fellows will hear from national experts on the effects of ACEs, their intersection with behavioral health, the role of protective factors and promising practices to mitigate harmful health outcomes and recent legislation relevant to the topic.

Addressing Maternal Mortality

This session will cover maternal mortality and morbidity. Speakers will provide perspectives on recent legislative trends, key considerations and promising practices to lower maternal mortality rates and close gaps in racial disparities in maternal health outcomes. Fellows will share state challenges, successes and efforts as they pertain to reducing maternal mortality and disparities in maternal health outcomes.

Opioid Use Disorder in Pregnancy - Intersection with Criminal Justice

Opioid Policy Fellows and Maternal and Child Health Fellows will learn about substance use and its intersection with pregnant women, neonatal abstinence syndrome and system level connections. The session will provide the opportunity for discussing solutions and sharing state strategies.
