Unified Human Foods Program: What Does FDA Reorganization Mean for States?

Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024 | 3-4p.m. ET

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will host a webinar with NCSL to discuss the FDA’s approach to food chemical safety.

In October 2024, as part of the agency’s reorganization, the new Human Foods Program was established to improve the FDA’s efficiency and effectiveness in carrying out its mission—to protect and promote the health and wellness of all people through science-based approaches to prevent foodborne illness, reduce diet-related chronic disease and ensure chemicals, both additives and contaminants that occur in foods from the growing or processing environment, are safe.

Deputy Commissioner of Human Foods, Jim Jones, will share with you more about the agency’s approach to food chemical safety and how the Human Foods Program is working toward strengthening FDA’s regulatory oversight of chemicals in the food supply through a science-driven approach to protect consumers from potential harmful exposure to chemicals in food.

Domestic Soil: The Agricultural Impacts of Foreign Ownership of Land

Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024 | 3-4p.m. ET

Foreign entities can purchase or lease land in the United States for a variety of reasons, including growing specialty crops, research, renewable energy development or investment holdings. Currently, foreign ownership is less than 4% of private domestic agricultural land, with 48% of those holdings being forest land. However, foreign ownership can cause concerns when it negatively impacts local agricultural operations or results in environmental harm. Join NCSL to learn more about what states are doing to protect agricultural land.
