Lead is a naturally occurring metal that was widely used during the 20th century in the United States due to its resistance to corrosion. However, lead has proven to be extremely harmful to human health, especially to young children. Despite a ban on the use of lead-based paint and lead water service lines, young children are still at risk for lead poisoning through these and other sources. States have enacted legislation to prevent lead poisoning including mandatory lead testing, remediation, and public education on the effects of lead on human health.
