Legislative races in 46 states will be conducted in November 2026. These include races in 88 of the nation's 99 legislative chambers. The table below indicates which states and chambers are holding legislative elections, and how many seats are up for reelection this year.
A total of 6,122 seats are up for regularly scheduled elections in 2026, representing 82% of the nation's 7,386 legislative seats. This page does not include any special elections that may be held in conjunction with the general election or at other times throughout 2026.
No legislative races will be held in 2026 in Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey or Virginia because they hold state elections in odd-numbered years. In 2025, House races will be held in New Jersey for all 80 assemblymembers and in Virginia for all 100 delegates. New Jersey and Virginia Senators have four-year terms and were last elected in 2023. In Louisiana and Mississippi, all members of both chambers have four-year terms and were last elected in 2023.
