While the Latino American population has steadily climbed from 12.5 percent to 17.1 percent since 2000, the rate of growth among state legislators has been slower, rising only 1 percent over the same period. In 2015, 279 state legislators, or 4 percent of all state legislators, identified themselves as Latino, a slight decrease from the 281 Latino members in 2013.
