Most people show up to court as required, but when people fail to appear at a hearing it can have serious consequences. It is also inconvenient for court staff, who must reschedule the hearing, and it can be inefficient for courts as a whole, which already face crowded dockets and case backlogs.
For defendants, not showing up in court can lead to a warrant, arrest and jail time, even when nonappearance was unintentional. Often, missing court is related to something as simple as forgetting about the hearing, lacking transportation or child care, or an inability to arrange for time off work.
