State legislators, legislative staff and those interested in public policy and professional development will have a unique opportunity to hone their skills with the return of NCSL Base Camp 2021, Aug. 3-5. The meeting provides tremendous value for those who work in, for and around state legislatures.

Policy Sessions: From ARPA to Vaccines

This year’s meeting kicks off with an update on the proposed federal infrastructure bill and how it will impact states. And that’s just the start. On the first day, attendees can learn about key policy issues such as drugged driving, qualified immunity for police, American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for states, and economic mobility.

During the next two days, in-depth policy sessions will cover education in a post-pandemic world, vaccine policies, using evidence to make public policy, pension reform, the energy grid, illegal gaming machines, budgeting, higher education, and the U.S. Supreme Court cases affecting states. Other sessions during NCSL Base Camp 2021 deal with the census, elections and redistricting.

Professional Development and Celebration of Staff

Designed with legislative staff in mind, this year’s event is full of instruction and training sessions. Here’s a partial list of scheduled sessions:

  • How to Keep Great Staff for a Stronger Institution
  • Pump Up Your Productivity!
  • Running on Empty: Strategies for Identifying and Managing Burnout
  • Mere Civility: Disagreement and the Limits of Toleration
  • Boosting EQ: How to Increase Your Emotional Smarts
  • You Can’t Pour From an Empty Cup: Self-Care for Servant Leaders
  • Legacy Knowledge Know-How in a Remote World

A special ceremony will be held to honor those who work behind the scenes in legislative chambers across the country. “A Salute to Legislative Staff” will honor those who won the prestigious Legislative Staff Achievement Awards and recognize others for their contributions to legislatures the past 12 months. Four-star Admiral William H. McRaven will be the featured speaker at the event.

Base Camp’s Sophomore Year

Born out of the pandemic, last year’s inaugural NCSL Base Camp 2020 provided the NCSL audience with a chance to learn and connect online with experts on critical issues and to spark their professional growth.

As the country emerges from the pandemic and NCSL’s in-person Legislative Summit returns in November, NCSL Base Camp 2021 is ideal for those who can’t travel. With more than 30 sessions, the cost is only $59 for state legislators and legislative staff, and $129 for others. Register today!
