Outside genetics, the environment has the foremost impact on a person’s health. Environmental health ensures that the natural and man-made environments are safe and do not harm human health.
in recognition of National Public Health Week and World Health Day it's worth noting that NCSL's Environmental Health Program provides state legislators information on chemical safety, radon control programs, carbon monoxide laws, healthy housing and food safety. Through meetings, webinars, and research reports, the program highlights environmental health concerns facing state legislatures.
The program addresses emerging concepts such as Health in All Policies which explores the health implications of environmental policies. It provides insight in state biomonitoring programs, which identify the levels of chemicals and pollutants in a population. It invites scientific researchers to meet with state legislators to present on the latest environmental health research.
NCSL tracks over 2000 bills each session on environmental health. In 2016, NCSL has identified 1917 bills that have been introduced on food safety, healthy housing, chemical safety and safe drinking water in the 46 states in session. 263 bills have been introduced on safe drinking water; 209 on waste water. NCSL has identified 485 bills related to food and food safety. 466 bills address chemicals and toxics.
More bills are identified and catalogued daily.
