The Law, Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee’s Summit agenda includes hot-topic programs on immigration, police-worn body cameras, marijuana and federalism.

The committee also will convene its annual roundup of important U.S. Supreme Court cases affecting states.

2015 Legislative Summit logoThe immigration session will explore border management and federal engagement with state and local law enforcement, and feature officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a state legislator respondent.

The program on police-worn body cameras will feature state and federal overviews on policing issues, a demonstration by officials with the Seattle Police Department’s pilot program, and discussion of recent legislation enacted in Texas.

A legal expert will overview the struggle among federal, state and local governments for control of marijuana law, while legislators from Washington and Oklahoma provide their takes on state actions and interests.

You won’t want to miss the annual Supreme Court Roundup, with an entertaining overview of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent term, with focus on cases in which the “Big 7” filed briefs and implications for state’s rights.

The committee will consider policy resolutions at the Committee Business Meeting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4.  Final votes on all policy directives and resolutions will take place at the Annual NCSL Business Meeting, scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6.

Among Summit Issue Forums will be a program featuring Piper Kerman, who wrote "Orange Is the New Black." There also is the session A Better Way to Keep Kids Out of Prison, with an update on trends in juvenile justice and proven policies that provide alternatives to costly facility placements.

See you in Seattle!
