Cruising under the radar of the most exciting presidential election in memory yesterday were 153 ballot measures on statewide ballots around the country.  Voters were faced with important and sometimes complex questions addressing taxes, social issues, health care, education, gambling, and a wide array of other issues.  What will the outcomes mean for you, your business and your state legislature? StateVote 2008 will provide insight on the trends in the states, the ballot issues that passed and failed, which party is in control and where, and what the new administration means for the states. 

The Experts:

  • William T. Pound is the executive director of the National Conference of State Legislatures. He is the nation’s foremost expert on legislatures and the legislative process, and fiscal and public finance issues. He currently has oversight responsibilities for the State and Local Legal Center.
  • Lou Jacobson is editor of Roll Call’s CongressNow. He previously covered lobbying, politics and policy for the National Journal and has been a frequent contributor to The Economist, The Washington Post, The Rothenberg Political Report and The Wall Street Journal.
  • Corina Eckl is director of the Fiscal Affairs Program at the National Conference of State Legislatures. She’s an expert on state budget and tax issues, and regularly provides information on state budget conditions to various organizations and members of the national media.

  • Jennie Drage Bowser is a policy expert in the Legislative Management Program at the National Conference of State Legislatures. She focuses on elections, campaign finance reform, initiatives and referenda, and term limits.
  • Tim Storey is a senior fellow in the Legislative Management Program of the National Conference of State Legislatures. He specializes in elections, redistricting and legislative organization.

The Stage Is Set for Change:

  • 75 percent of the states' 7,382 legislative seats are up
    for election
  • 44 states will hold legislative elections, along with Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the Virgin Islands
  • 11 governors' seats are up
  • All 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats are up for election
