Welfare Reform ProjectState TANF Spending for Federal Fiscal Years 2000 and 2001Andrea Wilkins and Jill Glaspey The National Conference of State Legislatures has compiled information on state TANF spending levels for Federal Fiscal Years 2000 and 2001. The first chart in each set (State Spending on TANF) gives state per capita spending levels and spending per poor child. The spending figures for FFY 2000 include MOE expenditures in TANF and MOE expenditures in separate state programs. The spending figures for FFY 2001 include MOE expenditures in TANF only. The second chart in each set (State Spending of State and Federal Money on Basic Assistance) gives state spending levels of combined state and federal money per capita and spending per poor child. These figures include total spending on basic assistance (basic assistance includes cash assistance and support services for TANF recipients). Total state and U.S. population figures are based on the 2000 U.S. Census. Numbers of individuals under age 18 living below the federal poverty level are based on the 2000 Current Population Survey. All fiscal information is based on the federal fiscal year 2000 and 2001 TANF spending figures compiled by the Administration for Children and Families. For more information about the figures contained in these charts, contact Andrea Wilkins (303-839-0231 or andrea.wilkins@ncsl.org) or Jill Glaspey (303-839-0200 or jill.glaspey@ncsl.org) with NCSL's Welfare Project. State Welfare Spending (FY 2001)
-Population figures were based on the 2000 U.S. Census.
