Hunger in America National Public Radio
"Hunger in America" is a recent series from National Public Radio (NPR) that profiles American families who have faced hunger in three different settings: rural, suburban and urban. Recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service shows that household "food insecurity" rose from 11.2 percent of households in 2003 to 11.9 percent in 2004. Food insecurity means that these households had trouble obtaining nutritious and adequate food in socially acceptable ways (ie: without stealing or resorting to emergency food resources). Approximately one-third of food insecure households, roughly 4.4 million households, experienced hunger as a result of their food insecurity. This series also provides information on the causes of hunger in America. It can be accessed here.
