AFI Agriculture and International Trade Committee
August 11-16, 2001
NCSL Annual Meeting Summary
The NCSL Annual Meeting was held from August 11-16, 2001, in San Antonio, Texas. Four new policies were adopted by the Agriculture and International Trade committee: Enforcement of Discrimination Prohibitions of the Packers and Stockyards Act, Farm Credit Institutions, National Calcium Initiative and Rural Policy. The committee also renewed a standing policy on the interstate shipment of state-inspected meat and poultry, a longstanding NCSL priority. In addition to the policy action, the committee hosted a series of spirited discussions on topics ranging from wetland protection to international investment agreements. Other sessions focused on alternative agriculture, rural technology, next generation crops, the national calcium initiative, rural policy and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Copies of all of the policies and handouts are available from Dave Naftzger or Steve Smith at 202-624-5400. Information is also available on the committee's home page at http://www.ncsl.org/statefed/afiagtr.htm.
