A wide range of new technologies are moving from the research and development stage to the deployment stage that can have a potential impact on energy planning, reliability as well as economic development and environmental compliance.  One such area of emerging technology includes both the new nuclear reactor designs recently approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and small modular reactors (nuclear reactors with an electricity output of less than 300 MW).
