Real ID Grant Program

June 2008
On June 20, 2008, DHS announced state awards for the FY 2008 Real ID Grant Program. The grant program will provide 48 states and territories approximately $80 million to assist with the implementation of the Real ID.

January 2008
On Jan. 29, 2008, DHS announced that an additional $50 million was available for state implementation of the Real ID as provided under the 2008 Omnibus Appropriations Bill (Public Law 110-5). The grant program will allow states to compete for approximately $80 million in funds to assist with the implementation of the Real ID.

December 2007
On Dec. 13, 2007, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released grant guidance for a Real ID Grant Program, which provides $31 million to states to assist with the implementation of the Real ID. The grant guidance indicates a preference for state applications that demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively with other states or entities in the development of the personal identification verification systems.

*Under the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act of FY 2006, Congress appropriated $40 million for the implementation of the Real ID. The remainder of the funds have been allocated to FEMA for administrative costs associated with the Real ID Grant Program and awarded to Kentucky to further develop software to assist with the verification of birth certificates and other vital records for individuals applying for the Real ID.
