Tour of Washington State Ferry System

Ride a ferry from Seattle to Bremerton, while hearing of the challenges faced by the state ferry system.  At Bremerton, a briefing on intermodal transportation will occur.  Meet at the Convention Center at 11:45 or the Colman Dock for a 12:10pm briefing and a 12:50 departure.  Food for purchase is available on the ferry.  (Space is limited so please e-mail jim.reed@ncsl.org if you plan to attend.)

Speed and Traffic Safety

Speed-related crashes cost society an estimated $40 billion per year and cause more than 30 percent of all fatal car crashes. Many states have turned to increased penalties and fines as well as photo-radar cameras in an effort to keep roads safe. Can speed limit laws, increased penalties and stepped-up enforcement help stop speedy drivers?

Implementing The REAL ID Act:  What's Next for State Drivers' Licenses?

With the passage of the REAL ID Act, states now have less than three years to meet rigid federal standards for driver's licenses and identification cards or face their invalidation for official federal purposes. The clock is ticking as states look to implement the costly mandates of this new national identification system while they assess what it means for privacy and civil liberties.

Driver Distraction – How Much is Too Much?

Driver distraction is blamed for almost one third of vehicle crashes and up to 10,000 deaths a year.  Many things distract, but new communications, information and entertainment technologies in cars over the last decade are getting increased notice. This session looks at recent findings and state, federal and local initiatives to deal with them.
