Baucus Hints at Movement in TAA Talks, Calls for Passage of FTAs When "Ready" Daily Report for Executives Banner No. 112 Wednesday June 11, 2008 Page A-14
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), saying that the three stalled free trade agreements with Colombia, Korea, and Panama should pass "when they're ready," indicated June 10 that there had been movement in talks with the Bush administration and the committee's ranking member, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), on trade adjustment assistance.
Baucus, who spoke at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, reiterated his previously expressed view that enactment of expanded trade adjustment assistance (TAA) is a necessary prerequisite for passage of the stalled Colombia FTA. While he favors the Colombia FTA because "it's a good agreement," he stressed that TAA passage must come first. Asked about TAA discussions with Grassley and the administration, Baucus responded: "We're moving." He said that the way for the administration to achieve its goal of the Colombia FTA was to have TAA pass first. "The White House knows it too," he remarked.
