2013 Family Leave Legislation

home careThirty-two states and Puerto Rico considered legislation related to family or medical leave during the 2013 legislative session.  A total of 148 bills were introduced and legislation was passed in 17 states, including a paid family leave law in Rhode Island and indefinite postponement of the implementation of Washington's paid family leave law.

Other enactments during the 2013 session include expansion of family leave benefits to extended family members and domestic partners, requiring bereavement leave, establishing task forces or study committees to consider the establishment of paid family leave benefits, and prohibiting local units of government from requiring that private employers provide employee benefits, including family leave or sick time.
