OVERVIEW

Throughout the United States, in schools, workplaces and communities, policymakers, employers and government officials are looking at policies, programs and incentives to help Americans achieve and maintain good health. As health care costs continue to rise, more states are encouraging citizens to become and stay well in order to prevent and reduce the costs of chronic diseases. Wellness policy options include promoting health and wellness programs in schools, worksites, and communities, enabling healthy choices and environments, ensuring access to a full range of quality health services for people with chronic conditions, eliminating racial, ethnic, and socio-economic health disparities, and efforts to educate the public about their health and how to prevent chronic disease.
