"Transforming Health in Tribal Communities" Preventable chronic diseases take a higher toll in Native American communities. A new federal program, Community Prevention Grants, will award grants to tribes, local governments and nonprofits to fight chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and to narrow gaps in health across population groups.

OVERVIEW

Healthy communities provide opportunities for people to choose affordable, nutritious foods and be physically active in safe environments. Today, more than 23.5 million children and adolescents in the United States—nearly one in three young people—are either obese or overweight, putting them on a trajectory of higher risk for serious, even life-threatening health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. States' comprehensive policy approaches to preventing obesity and promoting opportunities for healthy lifestyles can be effective in reducing health costs and increasing community wellness and health status in diverse communities, while also supporting economic development.
