OVERVIEW

States continue moving forward with implementing or responding to provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that expand insurance coverage and delivery systems. Concern exists about the capacity of the health workforce to handle the increased need for services.  The ACA offers support to existing state efforts to address health care provider shortages across several professions; increase workforce capacity in rural areas through the National Health Service Corps; and address licensure and regulatory issues related to providers. 

Exchange Sales Mean More Patients. The second year open enrollment period for private insurance plans offered through state and federal marketplaces runs for three months, Nov. 15 to Feb. 15, 2015. Results through Jan. 16 show about 7.8 million new and renewed enrollees in state and federal run plans. The sales sites serve both brand new applicants and some of the enrollees from 2014 who may want to change plans for 2015.  NCSL's report has the 50-state history and this year's plans.  A 60-page supplement details each state
