HEALTH INSURANCE PREMIUMS

The increased cost of health insurance is a central fact in any discussion of health policy and health delivery.  As annual premiums edge beyond $16,000 for an average family, costs are blamed for rising uninsured and "under-insurance."  For those Americans who are fully-covered, these cost realities affect employers, both large and small, not to mention the "pocket-book impact" on ordinary families.

The escalating cost of health care is a national and state focus, sometimes called a crisis.  NCSL has developed and  gathered numerous resources to help states look at options for health cost containment and efficiencies. A series of reports and articles describe combating fraud and abuse, new payment reforms such as global or bundled payments, all-payer databases, medical homes, accountable care organizations, pharmaceutical discounts and purchasing strategies, patient safety and avoiding medical errors, health promotion and prevention, electronic and Telehealth, changes in providers’ “scope of practice,” changes in medical malpractice approaches, and others.
