Comprehensive Cancer Control Efforts in the States

Cancer Incident Rates, 2006

Updated July 2010

United States Map of Cancer Incidence Rates, 2006State Comprehensive Cancer Control Programs

Since 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (NCCCP) has made great strides to reduce the occurrence of cancer in the United States. NCCCP supports 50 states, the District of Columbia, seven tribal groups, and seven U.S.-associated Pacific Islands and territories to establish coalitions, measure and track cancer rates, determine priorities, and develop and implement cancer prevention plans. Comprehensive cancer control (CCC) programs across the nation to promote healthy lifestyles and recommended cancer screenings, educate people about cancer symptoms, increase access to quality cancer care, and enhance cancer survivors' quality of life after diagnosis and treatment.

The NCCCP's success is based on partnerships that cross traditional boundaries to make CCC available in communities.

Effective strategies for reducing cancer deaths and the number of new cancer cases of cancer include, primary and secondary prevention efforts, ensuring that effective screening tests and treatments are available and accessible, and reducing behavioral and environmental risk factors.

CDC plans to conduct research to develop and evaluate comprehensive approaches to cancer prevention and control. Results will guide interventions designed to address issues such as health disparities and survivorship at state, tribal and territorial levels.

Some projects planned or under way will:

  • Describe components of state cancer plans and report on selected topics and issues covered by the plans.
  • Develop specific program performance measures that reflect the results being achieved through CCC.
  • Help states determine challenges of implementing their cancer plans, define strategies and obtain resources.  Conduct research to determine successful implementation strategies for CCC.

State, U.S. Territory, and Tribal Organization Program Contacts by Funding Status (Implementation, Planning or Not Yet Funded)

"Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and it is the leading cause of death among persons under 75 years of age.1 In 2005, 559,303 people—more than 1,500 people a day—died of cancer in this country, according to the U.S. Cancer Statistics: 2005 Incidence and Mortality Web-based report. That same year, 1,340,713 people were diagnosed with cancer in the United States.*2 In addition to its devastating personal impact, cancer cost this country an estimated $219 billion in 2007, including nearly $130 billion for lost productivity and $89 billion in direct medical costs.3 *Incidence counts cover approximately 96% of the U.S. population. Death counts cover 100% of the U.S. population. Use caution in comparing incidence and death counts."**The CDC supports collaborative efforts in states to reduce the incidents and deaths caused by cancer. Founded in 1998, the National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (NCCCP) provides seed money and technical assistance for these collaborative programs in each state and many territories and tribal communities. Programs address the full range of issues in prevention, screening, treatment, rehabilitation and palliation. For more information on these programs, please click the blue links or go to the CDC NCCCP website at: http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/ncccp/about.htm. *Incidence counts cover approximately 96% of the U.S. population. Death counts cover 100% of the U.S. population. Use caution in comparing incidence and death counts.
