Tour of Anadarko Natural Gas Drilling and Hydraulic Fracturing Operation
Participants toured an Anadarko gas rig, saw a hydraulic fracturing operation up close, and viewed a reclaimed drilling site. The science and technology behind these efforts was discussed, along with how the operation meets the regulatory standards in Colorado, which has been a leader in ensuring safe natural gas extraction.
Tour of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)
The tour of the National Renewable Energy Laboratories explored new work being done with renewable energy, smart grid technologies, energy storage and biofuels.

Combined Heat and Power
Combined Heat and Power (CHP) offers energy savings, reduced emissions and reliability advantages for power plants and smaller power generators by turning waste heat into useful energy. It also provides security by maintaining power when the grid fails— following Hurricane Sandy, buildings using CHP were able to maintain power and critical services. This session explored the technology, how it is being used, and the state policy efforts to increase the use of the CHP.

Natural Gas Infrastructure and Electricity Interdependence
The nation is enjoying a tremendous increase in domestic natural gas potential. While this may provide energy security and reliability benefits, an increased use of natural gas can pose conflict between natural gas and the electricity markets. Further, current infrastructure capacity may not be able to meet growing demand in some regions. This session addressed natural gas-related infrastructure challenges as well as the potential conflicts caused by the differing market structures for electricity and natural gas.
