NCSL Legislative Summit: Aug. 15, 2013
Dana Chisnell, principal researcher, CivicDesigning.org
Election expert Dana E. Chisnell has trained thousands of election officials to test the design of their ballots. She's the project leader for "Field Guides to Ensuring Voter Intent," a set of booklets that provide quick, easy and accessible help for local election officials to create the best possible designs.
Design matters for ballots, and also other election materials, in terms of improved accuracy and ease of voting.
Chisnell says lawmakers play a role in establishing good design policy. For instance, they can encourage usability testing for ballots and they can remove statues that are too specific, such as those that prescribe exact fonts.
