International Programs

Intern Program

The International Programs department of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) offers full- and part-time volunteer internships during the fall, spring and summer semesters. The International Programs department acts as a liaison between state legislatures and international organizations, foreign embassies, and parliamentarians and government officials from other countries. The department coordinates and provides linkages between parliaments at the national and subnational levels. The department conducts technical assistance projects, organizes conferences and holds briefings on subjects such as federalism, state fiscal and public policy, and issues involving the legislative institution. In addition, the department routinely organizes study tours both domestically and internationally for public officials focused on public policy and institutional issues.

Responsibilities
Interns may be asked to:

  • conduct country and/or issue research relating to international relations;
  • assist with programming and planning for study tours, technical assistance projects and/or NCSL's Annual Meeting;
  • help draft grant proposals; and
  • provide general office support to International Programs staff.

Qualifications
Candidates must possess good research, writing, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently. Knowledge of Windows-based software (Word, Excel, Access) is also required. Candidates with a demonstrated interest in international relations, government and/or state legislatures are preferred.

Duration
The internship offers flexible hours, but requires a minimum commitment of 15-20 hours per week during the academic semester or full-time (35 hours per week) during the summer.

Pay
Internships are unpaid. However, many university and college departments will award academic credit for internships.
