American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees
AFSCME: Katrina Disaster

In response to one of the worst disasters in our nation's history, AFSCME is providing extensive financial and human resources to assist the thousands of members and their families — as well as the many thousands of other individuals — affected by Hurricane Katrina. AFSCME has more than 3,300 members in Louisiana, more than 800 of whom work in the hardest-hit city of New Orleans. These hard-working public service employees will soon be back at work, aiding their fellow citizens, often while coping with the personal losses they've suffered.

American Hospital Association
The Care Fund

The state hospital associations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, in conjunction with the American Hospital Association, set up The Care Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization with the goal to provide financial assistance to hospital workers from those states whose lives have been turned upside down by Katrina.  All administrative costs are being donated by the associations so that all donations will be distributed to hospitals employees and their families.

American Insurance Association
American Insurance Association: Hurricane Katrina Information

The scope and nature of the destruction brought by Hurricane Katrina is unlike any other natural disaster in U.S. history. In addition to tremendous windstorm and storm surge damage along the Gulf Coast, the flooding and evacuation of New Orleans is unprecedented. The tremendous loss of life and property is tragic and scars our nation as a whole. It will take years to rebuild what has been lost in these communities; insurers will take on a central role in that rebuilding. The American Insurance Association and our member companies are very proud to be a key part of the nation's response and recovery system. We are processing claims, and stand willing and able to step up and play our proper role in the economic recovery of communities victimized by Hurricane Katrina.

Anheuser-Busch

Anheuser-Busch Press Releases

Anheuser-Busch Hurricane Katrina Relief Aid Fact Sheet

Before Hurricane Katrina hit, Anheuser-Busch staged water near the Gulf Coast so it would be prepared to send it in immediately. After the storm, the company’s logistics network, freight carriers and approximately 20 wholesalers have worked with government officials to find passable routes into the affected areas to deliver water to relief agencies.

Total contributions from Anheuser-Busch, its Foundation, wholesalers and employees equal $3 million, as follows:
- $1 million donation from the Anheuser-Busch Foundation to the Red Cross;
- $1 million donated by the company’s employees and independent wholesalers to the Red Cross Hurricane Katrina relief efforts;
- $1 million in matching funds from Anheuser- Busch to the Red Cross for donations from wholesalers and employees.

In addition, the total value in goods Anheuser-Busch has donated is worth approximately $1 million.

Association of American Railroads

Freight Railroads Meet the Challenge of Hurricane Katrina

As Hurricane Katrina moved inland after devastating much of the Gulf Coast, railroads moved rapidly to mobilize manpower both to move relief supplies to the area and to begin the long task of rebuilding severely damaged rail lines.

Within hours of Katrina’s passage, rail crews were out assessing damage, repairing track and bridges and clearing trees and other debris from hundreds of miles of rail line, because rail service is essential both to the national economy and to the recovery of the Gulf Coast.

In addition to providing essential transportation services, railroads and their employees have pledged millions of dollars in donations to help stimulate the region’s recovery and to help Katrina’s victims.

Information in a special section of the AAR web site includes updates on railroad relief and repair efforts as well as links to railroad web pages that deal with Katrina. Update on the progress railroads are making in restoring service will be provided here on a weekly basis until service has been largely restored to the region.

"The Foundation's mission to bring e-Learning to communities in need has never been more relevant," said Dick Anderson, chairman, BellSouth Foundation. "We want to make sure that high school students displaced by Katrina can stay on track for graduation, and on-line learning can help them to meet the necessary requirements."

These funds will augment a pledge of $5 million donated by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation. In the midst of this tragedy, Dell also remains focused on customers, and our effort continues to grow. Dell has agreed to provide extensive products and support to the affected areas and is working with customers, agencies and government officials to prioritize these requests. Freddie Mac
Freddie Mac: Hurricane Katrina Resources

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Freddie Mac has suspended mortgage payments for a three-month period and, in some cases, will authorize homeowners to receive September mortgage payments back. Following the three-month suspension, your servicer (the company which collects your mortgage loan payments) will have the discretion to offer further relief options on Freddie Mac-owned mortgages on a case-by-case basis.

The Freddie Mac Foundation is continuing its work in support of the nation’s foster children by committing $1 million to help foster children who are victims of Hurricane Katrina along the gulf coast. The Katrina Fund for Foster Children is part of the Foundation’s $5 million donation to help ease the burden for the thousands of families affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Freddie Mac Foundation’s $5 million donation is part of Freddie Mac and the Freddie Mac Foundation’s $10 million combined donation made earlier this month. Employees are also committed to helping, and the Freddie Mac Foundation is matching their contributions as well as doubling the match for their donations to support Habitat for Humanity’s hurricane relief efforts. To date, employee donations and donation matches total more than $700,000.

Please see our website for information about resources for homeowners.

GAMA
GAMA's Involvement with Hurricane Relief Efforts

Many individual GAMA member companies have already contributed generously to relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Other companies may be wondering how to go about getting corporate contributions of any kind to the victims of the disaster.  U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez summoned representatives of GAMA and other trade groups to the Commerce Department to brief the business community on what the Department is doing to organize and optimize business involvement in the relief and recovery efforts.

Please refer to our press release for more information.

International Council of Shopping Centers
ICSC Hurricane Katrina Response

Hurricane Katrina will be far and away the United States’ costliest natural disaster. When the enormity of the disaster became apparent,
ICSC and our members throughout the world immediately sprang into action. Thousands of shopping centers established donations centers and collected food, water, and money to immediately aid the victims and help in the long-term recovery efforts. Similarly, our retail partners started fundraising efforts on their own. ICSC's staff also got busy coordinating relief efforts with several government agencies and philanthropic organizations. ICSC is working with The American Red Cross coordinating industry relief efforts. To facilitate this campaign, during September, ICSC's Educational Foundation will be accepting and matching members' cash contributions to the American Red Cross. For more information, please visit our website.

We have also donated to the American Humane Association's emergency pet relief efforts.  We're working closely with government offices in Louisiana and Mississippi to provide emergency donations to the staging areas established in those states.   We'll continue to work with them, other state and federal agencies, and animal welfare organizations to continually assess the situation and respond.

MCI
MCI Supports Hurricane Katrina Relief

Hurricane Katrina has had a devastating effect on the US Gulf Coast region. In the wake of this disaster, the hearts, minds, energy and talents of MCI employees are intensely focused on assisting relief efforts in two primary ways: first, by keeping our network operational to facilitate communications in the area, and second, on providing humanitarian aid to those who are in need in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

MCI has pledged a $500,000 cash contribution to the American Red Cross on behalf of its employees and the company. The donation is comprised of a $250,000 immediate cash donation, and the other $250,000 will be part of a company-wide employee matching program. The company's goal is to reach a minimum of $3 million from MCI and employees combined through a matching cash donation program, in-kind donations, volunteerism and other relief support efforts.

Our thoughts are with those whose lives have been disrupted by the hurricane and its aftermath. We will all do our part to make things better for people in these hard-hit areas.

For more information about MCI’s relief efforts, please visit our homepage at mci.com.

As of today, employees have donated over $88,504, with the company match combining for a total of more than $177,008. That includes funds raised at employee events as well as donations made directly to organizations as identified via receipts to Community Relations. Employees can donate personal funds to any of the relief efforts and MedImmune will match the amount of total donations with a check to the American Red Cross.

On Wednesday, September 7, events across the United States in all MedImmune domestic locations raised funds for the American Red Cross. The Gaithersburg headquarters held an ice cream and baked goods sale. Offices in Frederick, Maryland, Pennsylvania and California sponsored employee barbeques. The field sales organization arranged for special donations to a local food bank in Louisiana.

Merck

Merck Response to Hurricane Katrina

Merck: Prescription Replacement Program for patients who lost medicines in Hurricane Katrina

Our thoughts remain with the families and communities along the Gulf Coast of the United States that have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent flooding in the region. Merck has taken several steps to assist with the enormous relief efforts that are under way:
- The Merck Company Foundation made an immediate $1 million donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to support relief efforts associated with Hurricane Katrina. To date, Merck has donated more than U.S. $10.7 million in medicines and vaccines to assist relief efforts across nine states.
This includes:
- More than $10 million in vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB), pneumococcal infection, varicella (chickenpox), measles, mumps and rubella.
- More than $530,000 in non-vaccine pharmaceutical products.
Additional shipments of Merck medicines worth approximately $194,000 are being delivered through the non-governmental organizations Direct Relief International, Interchurch Medical Assistance, MAP International and Project HOPE.

Merck continues to work closely with the Departments of Health of affected states and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services to assess the need for donated Merck vaccines, antibiotics and other necessary medicines. Merck expects to continue to make substantial donations of medicines and vaccines in the coming weeks.

Merck also has made a commitment to replace prescription medicines for patients (through retail pharmacies or Merck's U.S. Patient Assistance Program) who may have lost their existing prescriptions as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Mortgage Bankers Association
MBA Resource Center for Hurricane Katrina

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) and its members recognize the devastation people affected by Hurricane Katrina have experienced. MBA estimates that up to 360,000 loans could be directly or indirectly impacted and are valued at up to $48 billion. MBA is stressing that the most important thing consumers affected by Hurricane Katrina can do regarding their mortgages is to contact their mortgage banking companies. MBA is providing a growing list of 1-800 consumer hotline numbers for major mortgage servicers that are servicing loans in the affected areas. MBA has distributed Public Service Announcements with these consumer hotline lists across the nation in major media markets, with heavy concentration in southern regional publications. During this difficult time, the mortgage industry is offering mortgage relief to consumers. Most mortgage bankers are offering extended grace periods and are postponing any foreclosure action. This means that any borrower who lives within the zip codes published by FEMA as being federal disaster areas will not—during the lender’s grace period—be charged late fees nor have late payments reported to credit agencies which can negatively impact their credit scores. Mortgage bankers are assisting borrowers in making contact with their hazard and flood insurance companies. MBA also has made a donation of $500,000 to Habitat for Humanity. This donation will be used by Habitat to fund the costs of its program management staff in the Gulf Coast region for the next year.

National Association of Realtors
National Association of Realtors: Hurricane Katrina Relief

REALTORS® and the real estate industry have given almost $8 million for disaster relief in states affected by Katrina. These funds, which include a $1.15 million donation from the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®, will help those affected by Hurricane Katrina and NAR will absorb all administrative costs of the project.  NAR has worked with FEMA, DHS and the Louisiana Association of REALTORS® to develop http://www.hurricanehousing.net/.  This website allows those with available housing and other relief resources in all 50 states to post this information, and allows those with housing and other needs to access this information. The website helps users find emergency housing and provides information about federal and state assistance resources. REALTORS® across the country are identifying available housing resources in their communities and are posting this information on http://www.hurricanehousing.net/.  NAR has sent a letter to HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson to urge him to waive program requirements for a variety of housing programs on a temporary basis. NAR has also participated in and submitted testimony for congressional roundtables and hearings on Katrina’s impact.

National Education Association
NEA: In the Wake of Hurricane Katrina, NEA Pledges Help

NEA pledges to raise $1 million to go directly to students, teachers, and school employees affected by Hurricane Katrina.

"America's... school employees are a generous group... and we are setting up this fundraising effort to directly connect those who want to give with the students, teachers and school employees who need help," NEA President Reg Weaver said.

NEA's other hurricane relief efforts include:
- Deploying staff to states that were impacted by the hurricane, as well as states with large numbers of displaced families to help with recovery, relief and rebuilding efforts for children, teachers, school employees and parents.
- Working with business partners to develop joint relief projects to benefit schools in need of rebuilding and schools taking in displaced students.
- Advocating for flexibility from the federal government in addressing the issues that arise from the rapidly changing shifts in school populations.

Nestlé Waters North America

Nestle Waters' Outreach Efforts

In an effort begun on Tuesday, August 30, Nestlé Waters North America Inc. has delivered or committed for donation several million bottles of bottled water for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The company has more bottled water available as relief agencies issue requests and identify staging areas. FEMA, the American Red Cross and AmeriCares are the organizations through which Nestlé Waters is directly making its product donations. The company is providing both the bottled water and, in most cases, the transportation to staging areas designated by the relief organizations.

The company is a multi-year supporter of the American Red Cross, providing annual funding and product in-kind donations. During emergencies like Hurricane Katrina, Nestlé Waters also works with relief organizations and emergency management officials to ensure that disaster victims have an adequate supply of clean, safe drinking water.

Since Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, pharmaceutical industry donations of medical supplies, medicines and cash have increased sharply from an initial immediate contribution of about $25 million.

The assistance, which continues to grow by the hour, is being sent to public and private relief organizations, including AmeriCares, the American Red Cross and the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation.  Companies are also making direct cash and product contributions to medical centers in the region and providing free medicines to pharmacy chains for distribution to Katrina victims.

Procter & Gamble

Procter & Gamble Employee Relief Fund

The devastation created by Hurricane Katrina in and around New Orleans and other parts of the American Gulf Coast is shocking. P&G has a special concern since we have over 500 employees and four production and storage facilities within the affected region. The safety of these employees is our top priority. We're in the process of confirming that they and their families made it through the storm safely. We've made an initial contribution of one million dollars in combined cash and product donations to the American Red Cross and America's Second Harvest. Over 130 truckloads of P&G product has been shipped to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Iams Company also plans to provide food for sheltered animals and strays. We are in frequent, daily contact with the American Red Cross and America's Second Harvest to understand what we can do to help the larger community and be guided by them in making future contributions. This is the principle we follow in every disaster. Summing up, P&G will be there to help as the survivors of this terrible tragedy begin to put their lives back together.

With help from members of the Service Employees International Union, Louisiana-based SEIU local unions 21LA & 100 are moving resources and volunteers to aid families affected by Hurricane Katrina in immediate and long-term ways.

“We’ve been staying in shelters and caring for the sick – like checking for and treating infections caused by exposure to flood waters filled with sewage and toxic pollutants,” said Dian Palmer, RN, President of SEIU Local 1199WI who has been volunteering in Louisiana and recruiting other nurses to volunteer.

“We hope that out of this crisis will emerge a new commitment to strengthen vital public and emergency services, and to rebuild our communities by giving all workers a living wage, affordable health care, and a chance to live the American Dream,” said Maria Wickstrom, President of SEIU Local 21A in Louisiana.

Society for Human Resource Management
HR & Hurricane Response

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has launched a comprehensive three-pronged initiative to support members adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina. The first is to locate members directly affected by the hurricane and to help them return to productive work in the profession. The second is to tap into the HR expertise of SHRM members and staff to share vital information and resources. The third is to leverage partnerships with other organizations that can help serve the needs of SHRM members and their organizations.
