NCSL Programs
Family Economic Success	In today's uncertain and challenging world, many American families work hard and play by the rules but still struggle against financial insecurity and a real lack of opportunity. Since 2002, The National Conference of State Legislatures / Annie E. Casey Foundation Partnership on Family Economic Success has assisted legislators who want to create more opportunities for working families to succeed.
Women's Health	NCSL's Women's Health Across the Lifespan webpage provides links to NCSL resources for a variety of health topics as well as other helpful websites.
Maternal and Child Healthcare	NCSL's Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs focus on health issues concerning women, children and families, such as access to appropriate prenatal and well-child care, infant mortality prevention, emergency medical services, injury prevention, newborn screening, and services to children with special health care needs.
Cancer Prevention and Control	NCSL's Cancer Prevention and Control webpage provides links to NCSL resources as well as other helpful websites.
Human Services and Welfare	NCSL's Human Services Project covers early childhood and youth policy, hunger and nutrition and welfare reform issues, among others.
NCSL Standing Committees	NCSL has 11 Standing Committees whose membership consists of state legislators and legislative staff. The jurisdictions of the standing committees are similar to those of committees in the state legislatures. Standing Committees meet three times each year and allow legislators and staff to benefit from the experiences of other states in shaping public policy, experimenting with new laws, and managing the legislative institutions.

Women's Health Women Aren't "Small Men" (June 2007) Women's health issues are different than men's, and need to be addressed specifically. Medicaid Services Across a Woman's Lifespan (February 2007) This LegisBrief details how women use Medicaid services throughout a lifespan. Women and Cardiovascular Disease (April 2005) This LegisBrief discusses the dangers of cardiovascular disease for women. CD is the No. 1 killer of women despite race or ethnicity. Women's Health: Coverage of Services (April/May 2001) This LegisBrief discusses women's access to health care, as well as state and federal action related to women's health. HIV Testing of Pregnant Women and Babies (August/Sept. 2000) This LegisBrief discusses the issues related to HIV-positive pregnant women and their infants, including testing pregnant women and counseling. Women's Health: An Emerging Definition (May 2000) This report presents information about medical and social issues involved in women's health, and the various ways in which legislatures have chosen to address them.

Cancer Preventing Cervical Cancer (November/December 2006) This LegisBrief discusses cervical cancer, the second largest killer of women worldwide. Cancer Survivorship: State Policy Issues (2006) Policymakers who are aware of these cancer survivorship issues are better able to make informed policy decisions.  This booklet published by NCSL provides some examples of key policy issues related to cancer survivors, including health insurance, employment, pain management, family support and end-of-life issues. States Provide Cancer Treatment for Poor Women (September 2001) This article appeared in the September 2001 issue of NCSL's magazine, State Legislatures. Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment (July 2001) This state legislative report provides an overview of cancer screening and discusses various aspects of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Treatment Act of 2000.

Domestic Violence Domestic Violence Against American Indian Women (November/December 2005) When Children Witness Domestic Violence (August/September 2003) Hundreds of studies have documented the negative effects for children exposed to domestic violence. This LegisBrief examines one potential policy response - increasing penalties for perpetrators. Domestic Violence and Welfare Reform (June/July 2001) This LegisBrief, (Vol. 9, Number 27) discusses the link between women on welfare and domestic violence. Information is Power in Effort to Prevent Violence (May 2001) This article appeared in the May 2001 issue of NCSL's magazine, State Legislatures. Illinois Proposes New Gender Violence Act (February 2001) This article appeared in the February 2001 issue of NCSL's magazine, State Legislatures. Immigrant Women and Domestic Violence (October 2000) This LegisBrief, (Vol. 8, Number 38) discusses the issue of domestic violence against immigrant women.

Women in Politics The Unexpected Legislator (February 2007) This State Legislatures artcile discusses how, after unexpectedly losing their husbands, some women chose to step into the political spotlight by filling their late husbands' legislative seats.
