Working Smarter, Governing Better:
Forum for Women Legislators Promises Learning & Fun |
|
Would you like to spend four autumn days at a beautiful new resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean, meeting women lawmakers and discussing the issues and challenges you're confronting every day in your state?
If you're ready to talk about "Working Smarter, Governing Better" with elected women from across the nation and across the political spectrum, you won't want to miss the fifth national Forum for Women State Legislators. |
|
State Representative Val Ogden of Washington, "The CAWP meeting was one of the first I attended after being elected in 1990, and I found it very valuable. I have attended every one since then and have appreciated the opportunity to network for 2001!" |
Convened by the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), the Forum will take place November 15 - 18 at the new St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, CA.
At the Forum, you'll have the opportunity to discuss distinctive perspectives women bring to policymaking and analyze unintended effects of seemingly gender-neutral policies on women, children and families. Also participating in the Forum will be women at other levels of office; party and organization leaders; political women from other nations; representatives of the business, labor and foundation communities; scholars and journalists. CAWP is a non-partisan unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. For more information about CAWP and the Forum, or to register for the Forum, visit www.cawp.rutgers.edu, or talk with CAWP staff at exhibit booth 173 at the NCSL annual meeting in San Antonio. If you have questions, call Angela Bowie at (732) 932-9384, ext. 259. |

Women's Network to work with Mary Kay on Domestic Violence Issues
|
Old cell phone around the house or office? |

|
|
The Women's Legislative Network of NCSL is joining the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation and Mary Kay Inc. (whose mission is to "enrich women's lives") to highlight concerns about violence against women, particularly domestic abuse.
Breaking the Silence, Journeys of Hope, is a penetrating and innovative look at domestic violence in America. Underwritten by Mary Kay, this 60-minute special to be aired on PBS stations during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, tells the powerful stories of women who have broken their silence about domestic violence and who have taken the first steps toward creating healthy, stable lives for themselves.
For more information, and for resources to assist women, their families and friends, go to Mary Kay's website: www.marykay.com. Also, stop by the Women's Network booth for more information about domestic violence and for information about our plans for working with Mary Kay and other organizations to address issues of family abuse. |
Bring to the annual meeting - Booth 669! A joint project of Mary Kay and the Network, the cell phones will be donated to the Texas Donate-A-Phone project. We join Mary Kay in supporting the work of the Texas Council on Family Violence and its National Domestic Violence Hotline. Thanks to Alliance member Anne Crews of Mary Kay for bringing this need to our attention.

Legislators Participate in U.S. - Brazil
Legislative Exchange
(Denver, CO) -- Thirty years ago, only 4.5 percent of state lawmakers in the United States were women. Today, 22 percent of the nation's 7,424 state lawmakers are women. As the number of women in statehouses has increased, so too have the opportunities for them to build networks, forge coalitions and hone their skills as legislative leaders.
Eight female state legislators and staff were chosen to further broaden their skills through a study tour of Brazil sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). They included NCSL Vice President Sen. Angela Monson, D-OK, Sen. Lana Oleen, R-KS, Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-WA, Rep. Joan Bray, D-MO, Del. Carol Petzold, D-MD, Rep. Evelyn Lynn, R-FL, Susan Schaar, Clerk of the Virginia Senate, Annette Durlam, Personnel Director, NCSL, and staff liaison to the Women's Legislative Network of NCSL, and Nancy Brown, Executive Director of the Women's Legislative Network of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
During the 13-day tour, the American delegation attended the 5th annual National Conference of the União Nacional dos Legislativos Estaduais (UNALE) in Rio de Janeiro and visited several Brazilian state legislatures, including Pernambuco and Bahia. After meetings with women leaders in Recife and Salvador, the group concluded the tour in São Paulo with a roundtable conference of women leaders.
"In recent years, women have made great strides in the areas of politics, economy and society. Brazil in particular is a regional leader in the advancement of women's rights," said Sen. Angela Monson, delegation leader. "We have taken home a great deal of information from our Brazilian colleagues and hope that we have, in some way, helped encourage women's leadership within their state legislatures."
NCSL and the American delegation will return the favor in December as a delegation of Brazilian women legislators will visit the United States to attend NCSL's Winter Meeting and visit two state legislatures.
The exchange, supported through a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, aims to promote women's participation in the Brazilian state legislatures and encourage their advancement into leadership positions. NCSL's exchange program will focus on:
- Effective campaign strategies;
- Obstacles women legislators face and how to overcome them;
- Constituent relations;
- Media relations;
- Successful strategies used to affect change in the political process; and
- Leadership skill development.
By discussing public policy initiatives, NCSL hopes the exchange will help develop closer cultural and political ties between the two countries.

"The study tour was a memorable opportunity to learn from women leaders of Brazil. In spite of different language, culture and geography, we formed friendships, acknowledged common problems and shared experiences. The children we met have a very special place in my heart, for we interacted significantly in the common language of hugs and affection." Del. Carol Petzold, MD
|
"The two week study tour of Brazil provided a truly educational opportunity. I returned home energized by the commitment and tenacity of the women legislators and NGO activists who, against unbelievable odds, are making a difference in their country." Susan Schaar, Clerk of the Virginia Senate

NCSL President Sen. Steve Saland, NY, and Rep. Joan Bray, MO, with UNALE President Dep. Orlando Pessuti and Board member Maria José Maninha.
|
"Our meetings with the women legislators in Brazil began to provide us insights into our shared challenges, opportunities and problems as well as our unique differences. These experiences laid the groundwork for more in-depth communication during the second phase of the exchange when we meet the Brazilians again in the United States in December." Rep. Joan Bray, MO
|
|

Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles with Dep. Romario Dias.
"The Brazilian legislative exchange reinforced for me the value of international exchanges for American legislators as well as for those legislators in the countries visited. As a result of the trip, I have a plethora of new insights and experiences to use in my work in my own legislature, as well as an enhanced appreciation for the commonalties and differences existing for American and Brazilian women legislators."

"The problem of Brazil are those we also endure. And by exchanging information and ideas, we formed bonds of support that encourage working together to find solutions to our common social and economic ills.
The opportunity of interacting with other women legislators with broad experiences and different points of view expanded my horizons, inspired me to do more, and added a new dimension to my life."
