Mastering the Media: What Legislators and Staff Need to Know Before the Next Interview

Malin Jennings, senior vice president at Fleishman-Hillard (bio), facilitated this session and provided tips on how to become a reliable media source and deliver important messages during interviews. She also presented information about how to prepare for interviews, recognize dangers and avoid costly mistakes.

This luncheon session began with the election of the 2005-2006 Network Executive Board. Representative Nancy Detert, of Florida, was elected Network President. Representative Annie Kuether, of Kansas, was elected Vice President, and Delegate Carol Petzold, of Maryland, became Immediate Past President. For a complete list of the 2005-2006 Board, click here.

Following the election, Delegate Petzold recognized representatives from Dress for Success® Seattle. The Women's Legislative Network coordinated a Suit Drive with Dress for Success®, asking women legislators to donate interview-appropriate clothing to help low-income women on the path to self-sufficiency. Delegate Petzold moderated the panel discussion in which Senator Lisa Brown of Washington, Senator Bev Hammerstrom of Michigan and Sally Jewell, CEO of Recreational Equipment, Inc., discussed their experiences in the legislature and the business world.

Women Leaders: A Roundtable Discussion with Women from Around the World

North Dakota Representative Kathy Hawken, Midwestern Regional Member of the Women's Legislative Network Board, presided at this session. Women state legislators and women in elected office from several countries around the world gathered for an informal talk.  Attendees first watched the new Network video, "Resolution: Women, Power and Change in America."  Topics of discussion included: the issues that elected women face in different countries; how women make a difference in their legislatures; how international women can learn from one another; motivations for legislative service; and individual challenges and achievements.

Delegate Carol Petzold opened this breakfast session by thanking the event's sponsor, Novartis, and also thanking all of the Sponsor-Level Network Alliance members: AstraZeneca, Bayer Health Care, Exxon Mobil, Procter & Gamble and Wal-Mart.  Governor Christine Gregoire discussed the road that led to the Governor's Office, her experiences as Washington's Attorney General, and the role of women in politics.  Barbara Lee spoke about her Foundation's research on women in politics and the Governor's Guidebook series for women candidates. Delegate Petzold then opened the floor for questions from the audience.
