Women's Health Across the Lifespan

More than 50 state legislators gathered for a special seminar about women's health. Participants and faculty engaged in lively discussion about health policy issues and the importance of paying attention to women's health needs.

Sessions included:

Thinking Differently: Opportunities for Improving Women's Health Through A Higher-Level Approach.
Faculty: Dr. Wanda Jones, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health (Women's Health), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Director of the Office on Women's Health.

Dr. Jones spoke about federal initiatives to improve the health and well-being of women and girls in the United States through innovative programs and collaboration among the states.

Women’s Health Report Card
Faculty: Dr. Michelle Berlin, Oregon Health & Science University, Director, Center of Excellence in Women's Health, Associate Professor, Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology.

Dr. Berlin is a co-author of the national report, “Making the Grade on Women’s Health.” She spoke of state initiatives on women's health and examined policy options resulting from the national report card on women's health.

State Perspectives in Women’s Health: The Texas & Arizona Experience
Faculty: Dr. Sandra Guerra-Cantu, Public Health Regional Medical Director, Texas Department of State Health Services, San Antonio, Texas.
Suncerria Tillis, MBA, Manager, Arizona Health Disparities Center/Healthy Arizona 2010,  Arizona Department of Health Services, Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Sandra Guerra-Cantu and Suncerria Tillis discussed what their states are doing to address women's health and health disparities, and shared some success stories and challenges.

Starting on the Right Foot: New Member Orientation

Cosponsored with NCSL's Legislative Effectiveness and State Government Committee

Legislative leaders and staff directors are planning new member orientations that are more involved and interactive than ever before.  Experts led this roundtable discussion and provided advice on what and how to teach at these sessions and who should be doing the teaching.  They also talked about how to plan new member orientation so that first-termers continue to learn throughout the legislative session.
