Transportation Leaders Meeting Sessions Overview Presentations and Handouts
NCSL Fall Forum San Antonio, Texas December 4-6, 2006
Meeting Objective
State legislatures play a critical role in the implementation of national transportation policy. Every year, states spend more than $90 billion—almost 20 percent of overall state budgets—for highway construction and maintenance, traffic enforcement, highway safety, transit systems, rail and other transportation needs. Continuing to meet the transportation needs of its citizenry has become a major challenge for state legislatures given declining revenue sources, increasing costs ands competing needs. The NCSL Transportation Leaders Meeting will bring together the highest-ranking state legislators responsible for transportation issues in their respective states to address these issues. Legislators will have the unique opportunity to meet with their peers from across the United States to discuss common concerns and learn about crucial transportation issues including state level innovations and the federal transportation reauthorization scheduled for 2009. Working with transportation experts, meeting participants will develop Action Items that they can use to develop their own policy strategies at the state level, while at the same time providing a framework for efforts at the national level regarding the reauthorization process.
