Protecting Children: A Guide to Child Traffic Safety Laws

January 2003

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of fatal unintentional injuries suffered by children between the ages of 4 and 14. Thousands of children are killed or injured in traffic crashes each year. Much has been accomplished during the past 25 years to lower the fatality rate for children and to make travel by motor vehicle safer for them. State legislatures have passed laws and public education campaigns have educated parents about keeping their children safe in motor vehicles, while walking, while riding bicycles, while riding on school buses and as teen drivers.

This book provides state legislators and others with general information and policy options concerning children and traffic safety. Each chapter contains background information regarding specific issues and state laws in each area. The policy issues discussed in the book include occupant protection, school bus safety, pedestrian and bicycle safety, child endangerment and drunk driving, and teen drivers.
