Trucks and other commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) are a significant factor in safety on our nation's highways.  In 2003, crashes involving large trucks killed nearly 5,000 people and injured an additional 122,000 people.  Each year, state legislatures consider dozens of bills intended to improve CMV safety.  This report summarizes state legislative activity on CMV safety in 2004 and 2005.  It provides background information about truck safety and tracks state efforts to comply with new federal CMV safety laws and regulations.
