Introduction

America is growing fatter. A complex combination of social, cultural, environmental and behavioral factors contributes to the growing number of obese Americans. To respond across the spectrum, efforts are under way raising awareness and encouraging healthier eating and a more active lifestyle. Policymakers are striving to promote opportunities for physical activity and nutritious food choices in schools, workplaces and communities.

In response to interest from state lawmakers, industry representatives, public health advocates and the general public, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) initiated the Healthy Lifestyles Partnership project. The project’s goal was to provide a bipartisan forum for policymakers to discuss the many policy options currently under consideration to stem the tide of obesity by raising awareness, encouraging healthy eating and providing opportunities for physical activity. Public policy is developing in this area at a breakneck pace, and many legislators are not fully aware of the multifaceted efforts to address obesity by their colleagues, the public health community, health care companies and the food industry. This report is intended as an information resource to legislators and their staff.
